Michelle Williams Signs on as Glinda in ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’

There are many stars preparing themselves to play a role in the prequel to the “Wizard of Oz” which is entitled, “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” Now Michelle Williams has joined the ranks.

Based on information from the Hollywood Reporter, the charming actress has been tapped to play the role of Glinda the Good Witch.

James Franco had been previously named as playing the role as an underhanded salesman who arrives at Oz in his balloon and he becomes the Wizard of Oz.

Rachel Weisz is slated to play the part of the Wicked Witch of the East, Evanorah, who, many years before being crushed by Dorothy’s house, tries to get her younger sister, Theodorah, to become a bad witch too. Mila Kunis plays the part of Theodorah, who apparently gives in to her sister’s wishes as she turns into the Wicked Witch of the West.

Before Williams was offered the part of Glinda, Blake Lively, of “Gossip Girl” fame was believed to have the inside track for the part. However, Kristin Chenoweth, who has appeared as Glinda in “Wicked” the Oz musical, believes she knows who would be the best choice for the role. She said, “I always liked the thought of Reese Witherspoon [as Glinda].”

“Oz: The Great and Powerful” is slated to go into production in July. It will be filmed in Michigan and will be released in the fall of 2012.

Tony Award winning musical “Wicked” heads south right at the start of the new year for its first stop in 2012, in Jacksonville, FL. The Broadway hit show, which is currently on tour, will be holding a three week run at the Times Union Performing Arts Center from January 4 to 22, 2012.

Tom McGowan Takes Over Wizard Duties for Wicked on Broadway

Tom McGowan is taking over The Wizard role in the “Wicked” Broadway production at Gershwin Theatre starting on May 3.

“Wicked,” based on the novel by Gregory Maguire with the same name, tells the previously untold story of Elphaba and Glinda, the witches from Oz, and how they grew up to come Glinda the Good and Wicked Witch of the West. “Wicked” features a Stephen Schwartz score and book from Winnie Holman. Joe Mantello directs the production and musical staging is from Wayne Cilento.

Currently the cast also features Katie Rose Clarke playing Glinda, Teal Wicks in the role of Elphaba, Kathy Fitzgerald playing Madame Morrible, Etai BenShlomo in the role of Boq, Richard H. Blake playing Fiyero, Tom Flynn in the role of Dr. Dillamond and Jenny Fellner playing Nessarose.

McGowan was nominated for a Tony Award for his work in the original production on Broadway of La Bete. His other credits on Broadway include “Ivanov” and “Chicago.” McGowan won an Obie Award for his “The Food Chain” performance and also has numerous television and film credits.

Wicked Opens Australian National Tour in Adelaide

On Friday, the Australian “Wicked” production opened in Adelaide as part of their National Tour.

“Wicked” will play at Festival Theatre until at least May 26.

According to a report from AdelaideNow, at the media preview yesterday Bert Newton quizzed producer John Frost about the amount of money being made by the show.

Frost said, this show is breaking Adelaide house records.

We currently have advance bookings of $6 million. So if anyone tries to say audiences in Adelaide won’t pay, they’re wrong.

Starring in the production are Jemma Rix as Elphaba, Wicked Witch of the West, and Lucy Durack as Glinda, Good Witch of the North, David Harris plays Fiyero.
