On November 9 Denver company cast members for Wicked, the blockbuster Broadway musical, will sing the National Anthem at the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos game. Currently Wicked is playing at Denver Center for the Arts in Buell Theatre and is back through popular demand. Wicked’s production opened October 7 and will run until November 15.
Wicked has won 26 major awards. These include three Tony Awards along with a Grammy Award. Wicked tells the untold story behind Oz’s witches. Before Dorothy drops into Oz, two girls meet there. One girl is fiery, misunderstood, smart and has emerald green skin. The other girl is ambitious, popular and very beautiful. Wicked narrates the two girls journey of how they became to be unlikely friends and become Glinda the Good Witch and Wicked Witch of the West. This year on October 30 marked the sixth year on Broadway for Wicked.
Variety has called Wicked “A Cultural Phenomenon.” There are currently productions of Wicked in San Francisco, New York, London, Stuttgart, Sydney, Tokyo, as well as two tours in North America. The musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s book. Lyrics and music are from Stephen Schwartz, Winnie Holzman did the book. Joe Mantello directs Wicked and musical stage is from Wayne Cilento.
