The History of the Gershwin Theatre

The original name for the George Gershwin Theatre was the Uris. In 1972 when it first opened, the Uris was the next large Broadway theatre to have been built since 1931 when the Earl Carroll was constructed. It occupied six stories in the new Uris Building at Fifty First and Broadway, the former site of the Capitol movie palace. The 1,900 seat theatre was designed by the late Ralph Alswang, a set designer.

Wicked Omaha | Orpheum Theatre

Wicked will be coming to the Omaha, Nebraska playing the Orpheum Theatre from May 25 through June 12, 2011. This is a return trip for Wicked who last played Omaha in May 2009.

Wicked Appleton | Fox Cities Performing Arts Center

Wicked will be coming to the Fox Cities PAC in Appleton, Wisconsin from January 26 – February 20, 2011. This trip north will mark Wicked’s third pass through Appleton. 2011 Wicked Appleton Cast: Jackie Burns (Elphaba), Chandra Lee Schwartz (Glinda), Randy Danson (Madade Morrible) and Gene Weygandt (The Wizard).

It seems everyone has an obsession with Wicked. During the last five years, the show as dominated Broadway as the most popular musical, with big city natives and tourists nationwide trying to snap up tickets. At least 10 people immediately come to my mind who know every single last word to “Defying Gravity” and who are not afraid to sing the song in public.

With all the hype that is brewing its magic and sorcery on the streets of Melbourne, you would expect that the opening night for the show would be big. And it was.

Wicked Closes in Chicago

It is expected that David Stone, producer of the unprecedented “Wicked” Chicago production, will announce on Wednesday that the show will ring the final curtain down at the Oriental Theatre following the 1,500 performance on January 25, 2009. By the time that they fly away on their broomsticks, witches Elphaba and Glinda will have cast their musical spells over more than 3 million theatre goers over the 3 1/2 year run in Chicago.
